Only Twenty-One

He’d only been twenty when she was born. Barely an adult, life forced him to step up when others couldn’t. He took the leap, taking his infant little sister as a father would a daughter.
For years, he watched over her, nurturing and caring for her.
He knew that he was all she had. But he never thought the day would come when she would speak to him like that.
A Dark Night

It had been a dark night when it happened. The cold of December was just wearing off, yet the snow was still pouring, never relenting. Something was wrong with his little sister.
The man hurried out of bed, woken by the disturbing sounds coming from the eleven-year-old’s bedroom.
He rushed in to help. But what followed showed him what his sister truly thought and felt about him.
The Watchful Guardian

It had all started with the odd sound coming from the little girl’s room every night. Todd Bennet had always been a vigilant guardian over his little sister, Emily.
Their bond was forged in the fires of childhood, enduring through the highs and lows of life.
As the older sibling, Todd took his role seriously, always ensuring Emily’s safety and well-being.
A Disturbing Sound

Lately, however, Todd noticed something unsettling. Each night, as he lay in bed, a faint but persistent wheezing sound crept through the walls of little Emily’s room.
At first, he dismissed it as nothing more than a passing nuisance.
The two lived in an apartment in town, and there was usually the odd noise coming in late at night.
Growing Concerns

Yet, as the nights wore on, the sound persisted, growing louder and more pronounced. Todd’s concern deepened, convincing him that this might have been more than just a passing car outside.
The thought kept him up at night, gnawing at the edges of his consciousness like a persistent whisper.
He approached Emily the following morning, questioning her about the sound, but she waved off his worries with a forced smile, insisting that everything was fine.
The Unspoken Fear

Despite Emily’s reassurances, Todd couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled in his chest like a heavy stone.
Fear was slowly burrowing through his being. Was he missing something integral here?
He knew his little sister well enough to recognize when she was hiding something, and her cheerful facade only fueled his anxiety further.
A Sleepless Vigil

Night after night, Todd lay awake, listening to the odd sound coming emanating from Emily’s room. Knowing he couldn’t stand idly, he approached her room one night and walked right in.
But he wasn’t ready for the sight that awaited him. Reeling back, he begged his heart to calm.
He needed to be fearless and in control. He couldn’t lose his little sister. Not now when she was all he had.
Springing Into Action

Todd sprung into action, his heart pummeling his chest. He could feel the hot tears sting his eyes but wouldn’t allow them to fall.
With shaky hands, he did what he could to the best of his ability.
He’d already called the authorities and only prayed they’d make it in time. He would die first before he let anything happen to his sister. He had no clue how the girl would soon repay his kindness.
A Young Guardian’s Burden

But Todd was only twenty-one when he took Emily into his life. He faced a daunting responsibility thrust upon him unexpectedly.
Their mother, struggling both mentally and physically, couldn’t care for Emily, her baby.
Emily’s father, Todd’s stepdad, was unfit, grappling with substance abuse. Todd, in his second year of college, found himself at a crossroads when he discovered the harsh truth about his stepdad’s temperament.
A Frantic Escape

Fearing for Emily’s safety, Todd hastily whisked her away from their tumultuous home environment.
With no time to spare, he brought her along to his college dorm, seeking refuge from the storm that brewed within their household.
The weight of his rash decision settled heavily upon his young shoulders as he contemplated their uncertain future.
A Decision

Todd spent that night figuring out a way out of this massive problem. His little sister, still a baby, slept soundly in his bed while he took the couch.
By morning, he knew what he needed to do.
It would be a leap of faith into the unknown, a risk that would either pay off significantly or doom him and Emily forever.
His Goal

Todd’s decision was simple. He needed to defer from college. He would find an apartment and a job and take care of his little sister until the time their parents got back on their feet.
Yes, the decision, like the one that had landed him here, was rash. But Todd saw no other way out.
He needed to be there for Emily, needed to provide her with a good, stable life. He’d do anything to see that goal fulfilled.
A Sacrifice Made

For Todd, the decision to defer from college wasn’t made lightly. Understanding the importance of providing for Emily, he set out on a mission to secure a good enough apartment.
When that was done, he set out for employment.
Every sacrifice he made was driven by a singular purpose: to safeguard and nurture his little sister, who relied solely on him for stability and love.
A Journey Of Learning

As Emily’s legal guardian, Todd delved into the intricacies of parenthood with determination and fervor.
He devoured parenting books, sought guidance from support groups, and embraced the challenges that came with raising a child.
Despite the initial shock of assuming such a role at a young age, Todd’s love for Emily grew boundlessly. Yes, every day was a struggle. But he was glad he was doing all of it for an important purpose.
A Shift In Perspective

The days slowly counted, some good and others tough. Though Emily was technically his sister, Todd began to see her through a different lens—as his own daughter.
The bond they shared transcended mere familial ties; it was rooted in unconditional love and mutual dependence.
Todd’s heart swelled with affection each time he looked into Emily’s innocent eyes.
A New Beginning

Despite the challenges they faced, Todd managed to secure a stable job that afforded them a modest yet comfortable lifestyle.
With his hard-earned income, he rented a cozy apartment in town and enrolled Emily in a reputable public middle school.
He even returned to college and cleared his degree. Hope flickered within Todd’s heart as he dared to dream of a brighter future for them both.
A Parent’s Devotion

Every decision he made revolved around Emily’s well-being.
From choosing a suitable school for her education to providing a comfortable home environment, his dedication knew no bounds.
He juggled work and parental duties with unwavering commitment, determined to give Emily the best life possible. But just as things were going perfectly, disaster struck.
A Routine Established

Eleven good years had passed, and life had settled into a predictable rhythm as Todd and Emily adjusted to their circumstances.
Mornings were filled with hurried breakfasts and school preparations, while evenings saw them sharing stories and laughter over dinner.
Despite the absence of their biological parents, their makeshift family thrived on love and resilience. But out of nowhere, the odd sounds started emanating from little Emily’s room.
A Normal Night

It all began one casual Friday night. That night, Todd had prepared himself and his sister a meal of chicken and rice, and by ten pm, they had gone to bed. Usually, Todd would be on his phone, scrolling through social media.
That was exactly what he was doing that night. He scrolled through post after post, but that was when he heard the sound he’d never noticed before.
It sounded like wheezing, but when he sat up in his bed and tried to listen out for it, the sound only became more intense. Todd didn’t know it at the time, but his life was about to take a tragic turn.
The Sound

As he sat motionless in his bed, he noticed the sound becoming louder. It sounded like it was coming from a corner of his bedroom, which freaked him out.
Over the years, he’d heard many strange sounds around their apartment. He always assumed it was caused by an upstairs neighbor or someone in the streets below them.
That’s what he thought that night. He assumed his upstairs neighbor was having trouble breathing and decided to ignore it. But little did he know that the situation was far worse than he thought.
Looking After Her

For eleven years, Todd dedicated his entire life to looking after his sister and giving her the best future possible. She was on his mind constantly.
As long as she was healthy and safe, he didn’t mind losing a few hours of sleep over some strange noise. He assumed his sister was fast asleep, but that wasn’t the case.
As the minutes passed, the sound became less noticeable. It simply became background noise, but Todd was unaware that it was coming from their apartment.
Subsiding

He stayed up until midnight that night, and eventually, the sound subsided. Soon enough, he finally began drifting off, but just then, he heard another terrible sound.
The sound of glass breaking made him shoot up from his bed. His mind instantly shot to his little sister. Was Emily alright? He had to check.
He quickly rushed out of his bedroom and made his way toward Emily’s room. Inside, he could hear movement. But what was she doing up at that hour? “Emily?” He knocked on the door, unprepared for what was about to happen.
Respecting Her Privacy

“Don’t come in!” His sister called through the door. He frowned to himself. He respected her privacy and would never enter her room without her permission, but what was going on in there?
He could hear the sound of broken glass being moved around his sister’s bedroom floor. What on earth was happening in there? Why wouldn’t she let him in?
“Emily, are you okay? I heard glass break. Do you need help?” He called, but his sister took a moment before she responded. If only he had decided to barge in there.
An Explanation

“I knocked the lamp off my desk, don’t worry. It’s almost clean,” She said, but her voice sounded different. It wasn’t just a case of being tired.
Her voice sounded weak, almost like she had been crying. Todd wondered what had happened. He knew that his sister struggled with her mental health from time to time.
But given their circumstances, he thought that was normal. It was clear that she wanted to be left alone, and Todd respected that. Walking away from her bedroom door was the worst thing he could have done.
Waking Up

Todd went to bed right away, but as soon as he awoke the following morning, he thought back to what had happened the night before.
He jumped out of bed the second he thought of his sister, he rushed out of bed and dashed out of his bedroom door. He was worried about Emily and wanted to ensure that she was alright.
As he stepped foot in the hallway, he could hear Emily fumbling with a cereal box in the kitchen, and as soon as he walked in, he noticed the horrifying look on her face.
She Looked Sick

The little girl’s eyes were sunken with large, black rings around them. Todd couldn’t help the uneasy feeling that settled in the pit of his stomach.
“Emily, are you okay?” He asked, his eyes wide with concern for the small, eleven-year-old girl before him. With weak hands, she placed the cereal box down on the counter.
She nodded hesitantly, and Todd could tell that she wasn’t being truthful. “I’m just tired. I struggled to sleep last night. I only slept for two hours,” She said in the same weak voice.
Avoiding Him

Todd couldn’t help but feel like there was more to the story than his sister was letting on. She avoided his eyes as he stepped closer to her.
Todd knew better than to scare her off. He simply wanted to talk to her about what had happened the night before, but the room was filled with a strange tension. “Did the weird sounds keep you up, too?” He asked.
But he didn’t receive a straight answer. His sister simply shrugged her shoulders, avoiding his eyes as she left the kitchen with her cereal in hand.
Secretive

Todd was confused. Why on earth was she being so secretive? Emily and Todd had always told each other everything, but now, his sister couldn’t stand to be in the same room as him.
Todd slowly turned to look at her as she walked away. She ventured into her bedroom and closed the door behind herself. Todd tried to think of a reasonable explanation.
Was she just really tired? She had never acted this way before. He couldn’t help but feel a little worried. But that night, he would learn the devastating truth.
Shouting Through The Door

For the rest of that day, Todd didn’t see his little sister. When he knocked on her door for dinner, she shouted through the door that she wasn’t hungry.
He knew the importance of giving his sister her space, but he couldn’t deny that her behavior was worrying him. Usually, they would spend their Saturdays hanging out together.
That day, he caught up on some work while his sister remained behind her bedroom door. He just hoped that everything would be back to normal the following day, but it wouldn’t.
Heading To Bed
As the night grew late, Todd realized it was time to hit the bed. However, before doing so, he decided to check on Emily to see if she needed anything.
He quietly knocked on her door, but there was no response. Assuming that she had already dozed off, he didn’t want to disturb her.
Before leaving her to sleep, he wanted to make sure that she had something to eat if she felt hungry later, so he left a note informing her about the leftovers in the fridge.
Peaceful Sleep
However, little did he know that Emily’s silence was more than just a sign of her deep sleep.
It was a reflection of the emotional turmoil she was experiencing, which had left her feeling isolated and alone.
Todd had a peaceful sleep that night, his mind at ease about his little sister Emily. He would have tucked her into bed after reading her favorite bedtime story if she wasn’t feeling unwell. He just hoped that she had fallen asleep with a smile on her face.
Making Breakfast
Todd was confident that she would sleep soundly through the night, and he had no reason to think otherwise. He woke up in the morning and headed downstairs to make breakfast.
He knew that Emily would love the idea of sizzling bacon, and Todd was sure that the aroma would lure her out of her room.
But to his surprise, Emily was still in bed, fast asleep, even with the aroma filling the house. Todd called out her name and tried to wake her up, but she didn’t come out. Little did he know that things were much worse than he thought.
A Delicious Meal

Todd had prepared the delicious breakfast for little Emily and now had to deliver it straight to her bed. He felt bad that she was feeling unwell.
He was determined to make her feel better and decided to take the breakfast to her bedroom if she didn’t come to the kitchen.
Todd had cooked three eggs and a generous amount of bacon, just the way Emily liked it. He carefully placed everything on a tray, making sure it was arranged perfectly and headed towards her room.
Knocking On Her Door
He paused outside her door and knocked gently, not wanting to disturb her if she was resting. When there was no answer, he waited a few seconds before slowly opening the door.
The room was quiet and dimly lit, with the curtains drawn, and the only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioning.
He tiptoed towards her bed, not wanting to wake her up, and placed the tray on the bedside table. As he turned around to leave, he noticed something strange.
She Was Missing

The lump that he assumed was Emily seemed a little off. He decided to investigate, but he wasn’t ready for what he’d find.
Todd’s mouth hung open, and he nearly dropped the tray of breakfast on the ground. His anxiety shot through the roof as he realized that Emily’s bed was empty.
He searched the room but couldn’t find her anywhere. Suddenly, he noticed that her window was wide open, and his heart sank.
Blood
Todd couldn’t understand how Emily could have left the house without telling him. He was worried sick and didn’t know what to do next.
Todd scanned the area carefully, taking note of the broken lamp inside the dustbin. However, his attention was quickly diverted when he spotted a few droplets of blood on the floor.
It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to make him feel uneasy.
Acting Fast
He knew he had to act fast and find his sister. The sense of urgency within him grew stronger as he realized that something was not right.
With a heart full of worry, he took a deep breath and began his search.
Without any second thoughts, Todd swiftly placed the tray on the countertop and dashed toward the hallway. He fumbled with his keys impatiently until he finally managed to unlock the front door. His heart was racing, wondering where she could be.
Looking For Her
He rushed to the back garden and scanned the area frantically, hoping to find her. The swing set was empty, and there was no sign of her.
Todd’s mind started racing with questions. How long had she been missing? Was she even there the previous night when he knocked on her door and got no response? The uncertainty was unsettling.
Todd’s thoughts were racing at an alarming pace as he tried to make sense of the situation at hand. His heart was pounding in his chest, and a sense of foreboding had settled over him like a heavy fog.
Searching Everywhere
Was this all just a game of hide and seek with young Emily, or was there something more sinister at work here? The thought of her being abducted sent chills down his spine, and he knew he had to act quickly if he was going to find her before it was too late.
With a sense of urgency, Todd set out to search every inch of the area, determined to bring Emily back to safety.
Todd’s heart was racing as he frantically scanned the pavement and the street, his eyes darting back and forth in search of his little sister.
Asking The Neighbors
A wave of panic washed over him as he realized that she was nowhere to be seen. He approached his neighbors, his voice trembling as he asked them if they had seen her, but their response was bleak. They simply shook their heads, unable to provide him with any useful information.
Todd’s mind raced with fear and uncertainty, and he considered reaching out to the police for help, but he was hesitant.
He knew that once he made that call, the situation would become real – too real.
Going Home
With a heavy heart, he trudged back home, his eyes darting anxiously from side to side, hoping that somehow, somewhere, his little sister would appear before him.
After Todd went inside the house, he felt his heart racing with anxiety as he tried to calm down by having a glass of cold water.
Suddenly, he heard something that made him freeze in his tracks. He immediately rushed back into Emily’s room only to find that the tray of breakfast he had prepared for her was finished.
Someone Had Eaten It
Todd’s heart sank as he realized that someone had been there in the room with Emily. Just then, he heard a voice behind him that made his blood run cold.
The voice said, “That was really good! Thanks!” Before he could turn around, Emily hugged him from behind, and he felt a sense of relief wash over him.
Todd smiled, but he knew that Emily had no idea what he had just been through.
Worried For Nothing
As he looked at her wet hair, he realized that she must have showered and been drying off while he was preparing breakfast.
He felt foolish for not checking the bathroom, but he was grateful that Emily was safe, at least for the time being.
Todd knew that he needed to be more careful and vigilant from now on, as he couldn’t risk losing her again. His eyes caught a glimpse of the small band-aid on Emily’s hand.
Explaining The Blood
He couldn’t help but stare at it for a few seconds until Emily noticed and quickly explained, “Sorry. I cut myself on the lamp when it broke, but don’t worry, I fixed myself up.” Todd felt a sense of relief that the injury wasn’t serious, and he couldn’t help but smile at her in encouragement.
He could see the pride in her eyes for putting on the bandaid by herself.
However, little did Todd know that this was just a brief moment of respite, and things were about to take a turn for the worse.
Alone

That night, Todd ate dinner by himself and watched a tiny bit of television before he decided to go to bed. It was just like the night before. Todd lay in bed for a few hours, scrolling on his phone.
Social media took his mind off of the strange feeling in his stomach. That entire day, he’d felt uncertain about what was going on, but finally, he got to distract himself.
It was around midnight when he finally decided to get some sleep. He placed his phone on the bedside table and flipped around, but little did he know that he would not be getting any sleep that night.
Drifting Off

It only took a few minutes for Todd to start drifting off, but as he did, something strange happened. All of a sudden, he heard the same strange noise from the night before.
His eyes shot open as he glanced around his dark bedroom. Once again, it sounded like it was coming from a corner of his bedroom. But it wasn’t.
He tried to close his eyes and sleep through it, but the sound was becoming louder and more consistent, which kept him from falling asleep. That was when he decided to investigate it.
Where Was It Coming From

He slowly sat up in bed and tried to listen out for the sound. He tilted his head to the side, trying to figure out if the sound was coming from his upstairs neighbor’s apartment.
But as he began turning his head, trying to figure out where the wheezing sound was coming from, he realized something truly bizarre.
The sound wasn’t coming from above him, nor was it coming from inside of his bedroom. It appeared to be coming from down the hallway. He had to investigate.
A Realization

As soon as Todd arose from his bed, the sound already became louder. He slowly walked toward his door and pressed his ear against it. That was when he heard it the most clearly.
Concern washed over him as he pressed his bedroom door open. But as soon as he stepped into the hallways, he realized what he was hearing and where it was coming from.
The wheezing sound was coming from his sister’s bedroom, and he could clearly hear that she was the one making those sounds. His blood ran cold. Was she okay?
A Troubling Discovery

As Todd stood at the threshold of Emily’s room, his heart pounded in his chest like a relentless drum. He pushed the door open slowly, the creak echoing through the silent apartment.
What he saw inside froze him to the core.
Emily lay on her bed, her small frame wracked with coughs, her face flushed with fever. The wheezing that haunted Todd’s nights was louder now, more agonizing.
Facing The Unthinkable

Fear gripped Todd’s soul as he rushed to Emily’s side, his hands trembling as he checked her temperature. It was dangerously high.
Panic threatened to consume him as he realized the gravity of the situation.
Emily needed help, and she needed it fast. With determination hardening his resolve, Todd scooped his little sister into his arms and raced out of the apartment, his mind racing with a single thought: to save her at all costs.
The Race Against Time

Every step Todd took felt like an eternity as he hurried down the stairs, his sister’s labored breathing a constant reminder of the urgency of the situation. He knew he had to act quickly. Every second was precious.
Reaching the ground floor, Todd burst through the door and into the cool night air.
Confusion had convinced him that his sister needed fresh air when she needed immediate medical attention.
A Sister’s Struggle

Emily’s weight felt heavier with each passing moment, her body trembling in Todd’s arms. He could feel her desperation, her silent plea for relief from the suffocating grip of her illness.
But Todd refused to let despair take hold. This state of mind told him to take his sister back into the house.
With unwavering determination, he pressed on, his heart pounding in rhythm with Emily’s labored breaths.
A Glimmer Of Hope

Finally, Todd carried his sister into his room, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he laid Emily gently on his bed.
With trembling hands, he reached for the emergency inhaler he had stashed away for just such an occasion.
As he administered the medicine, Todd felt a surge of hope floods his veins. He prayed silently that it would be enough to ease Emily’s suffering, even if only for a moment.
The Call For Help

With Emily’s breathing starting to ease, Todd knew he couldn’t rely on the inhaler alone. He reached for his phone, his fingers flying over the screen as he dialed the emergency services.
His voice was steady as he explained the situation, his heart pounding in his chest as he begged them to hurry.
Help was on the way, but every passing second felt like an eternity.
A Desperate Wait

As Todd waited for the ambulance to arrive, he sat by Emily’s side, his hand clasped tightly in hers.
He could feel her fevered skin beneath his touch, a stark reminder of her fragile state.
Despite his efforts to stay calm, fear gnawed at Todd’s insides. He prayed silently for the paramedics to arrive soon to whisk Emily away to safety.
The Arrival Of Aid

At long last, the wail of sirens pierced the night, signaling the arrival of the ambulance. Todd’s heart leaped with relief as he rushed to let them in, his eyes pleading for them to save his sister.
The paramedics sprang into action, their movements swift and practiced as they assessed Emily’s condition.
With gentle hands, they lifted her onto a stretcher, ready to transport her to the hospital.
A Father’s Love

As Todd rode in the ambulance beside Emily, his mind raced with memories of their childhood together.
He remembered all the times he had looked out for her, protected her, loved her like a father would.
And now, as he watched her frail form lying unconscious before him, Todd felt a surge of protectiveness, unlike anything he had ever known. He would do anything to keep her safe, to see her smile again.
The Hospital’s Embrace

When they arrived at the hospital, Todd’s heart clenched with anxiety.
He watched as Emily was wheeled away by the paramedics, disappearing into the sterile corridors of the emergency room.
He longed to follow her, to stay by her side until she was out of danger. But all he could do was wait, and his hands clenched into fists at his sides as he prayed for her swift recovery.
A Whisper Of Gratitude

As Emily was whisked away, she turned to Todd with a weak smile, her voice barely a whisper as she uttered three simple words: “Thank you, Dad.”
Todd’s breath caught in his throat at the unexpected declaration.
Tears pricked at his eyes as he reached out to grasp Emily’s hand, squeezing it tightly in his own.
The Weight of Words

Those three words hung heavy in the air between them, filling the silence with their unspoken meaning. Todd’s heart swelled with love for his little sister, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
In that moment, he realized just how much Emily meant to him and how much he would sacrifice to keep her safe.
She was his world, his everything, and he would do anything to protect her.
A Father’s Tears

As Todd sat alone in the waiting room, his emotions threatened to overwhelm him. He buried his face in his hands, tears streaming down his cheeks unchecked.
It wasn’t until now that he truly understood the depth of his love for Emily, the lengths he would go to for her sake. She was more than just his sister—she was his daughter in every sense of the word.
He was glad Emily saw it that way, too. Luckily, the doctors found nothing alarming about her health. Todd couldn’t thank his lucky stars enough.
