Algo Iba Mal
Cuando Taylor, la hija de Mike, llegó a casa llorando en más de una ocasión, Mike supo que algo iba muy mal.
Pero ella se mostraba muy imprecisa cuando él le preguntaba qué la hacía tan infeliz.
Fue entonces cuando Mike ideó un plan para ver qué era lo que molestaba a su hija. Iba a llegar al fondo del asunto como fuera.
Padre Sobreprotector
Mike era muy sobreprotector con Taylor, su hija de ocho años. Ella era su orgullo y alegría. Por eso, cuando se ponía muy triste por algo, Mike quería saber qué era lo que la preocupaba.
Pero Taylor tenía demasiado miedo para hablar, lo que hacía que Mike y su mujer, Tiffany, estuvieran muy preocupados por su bienestar.
No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que Mike tuviera el plan perfecto para ayudar a su hija.
Una Alumna Ejemplar
Taylor era una niña enérgica y burbujeante de ocho años. Le encantaba montar en bicicleta y jugar al aire libre. Le gustaba especialmente el colegio porque tenía muchos amigos.
También era una de las favoritas de su profesora porque era un as con los deberes. En general, Taylor era una estudiante ejemplar.
Pero las cosas cambiaron rápidamente cuando Taylor dijo que no quería ir más.
Lo Mejor De Su Día
Todo empezó cuando Mike fue a buscar a Taylor al colegio, como hacía siempre. Para él, lo mejor del día era ver a su hija despedirse de sus amigos y subir rápidamente al coche familiar.
La mayoría de los días, Mike hacía que el viaje de vuelta a casa fuera muy especial.
Pasaban por el autoservicio de McDonald’s para comprar el favorito de Taylor, un Mcflurry de Oreo.
¿Todo Bien?
Pero un día, Taylor corrió hacia el coche sin saludar a sus amigos. Subió al coche con una mirada severa.
“Hola, Calabacita. ¿Va todo bien? ¿Qué tal el día?”, le preguntó. Pero Taylor se limitó a sentarse en el asiento y abrocharse el cinturón.
Mike condujo directamente a McDonald’s para darse un capricho.
Llorando
Mientras volvían a casa, Mike se dio cuenta de que algo le preocupaba a su hija.
Pero el problema era que ella no hablaba y él no quería presionarla.
Cuando llegaron a casa, ella se fue a su habitación. Estuvo allí sentada durante horas y, cuando Mike fue a verla, se dio cuenta de que había estado llorando.
No Podía Pasar
“¿Qué pasa, cariño? ¿Quieres hablar de ello? ¿Qué te preocupa?” Pero Mike no conseguía comunicarse con su hija. Ella no parecía querer hablar del asunto.
Mike decidió dejarlo estar. Mañana será otro día, pensó. Las cosas irían mejor.
Pero Mike no tenía ni idea de lo equivocado que estaba.
Una Lucha
A la mañana siguiente, a Taylor le costó mucho levantarse de la cama para ir al colegio. Se inventó todas las excusas posibles para quedarse en casa. Pero Mike y Tiffany no se lo creyeron y, al final, Taylor tuvo que vestirse y prepararse para ir.
Se enfurruñó todo el camino a la escuela mientras Tiffany conducía.
No había manera de llegar a ella, y Tiffany se preocupó aún más cuando salió del coche sin siquiera un beso de despedida.
Peor
Pero el día estaba a punto de empeorar para la familia Reeves. Taylor no estaba mejor que antes. De hecho, esta vez estaba mucho peor.
Mike pudo ver que, una vez más, su hija estaba de mal humor cuando subió al coche.
“Oye, ¿vamos a por unos helados riquísimos? Estoy seguro de que te hará sentir mejor”, sugirió.
Sin Hablar
Pero Taylor tenía otros planes. “No, sólo quiero irme a casa”, dijo. Mike condujo entonces a casa en silencio. Ya no sabía qué hacer.
Su hija no les decía cuál era el problema. Decidió volver a hablar con ella esa noche.
Era hora de averiguar qué pasaba en el colegio.
Conversación Nocturna
Esa noche, después de cenar, Mike y Tiffany se sentaron con Taylor en su habitación.
Querían tener una conversación sincera y averiguar qué le preocupaba a su hija.
“Taylor, me he dado cuenta de que últimamente estás muy triste. ¿Sucede algo en la escuela que no nos estás contando?”. Preguntó Mike con amabilidad.
Ya No Me Gusta
Taylor jugueteaba con su conejito de peluche y evitaba el contacto visual. “No quiero ir al colegio, papá. Ya no me gusta”, susurró finalmente, con lágrimas en los ojos.
A Mike se le encogió el corazón. Se daba cuenta de que había algo más en la historia, pero no quería presionar a Taylor.
En lugar de eso, decidió adoptar un enfoque diferente.
La Determinación De Papá
“Cariño, entiendo que a veces el colegio puede ser duro, pero estoy aquí para ayudarte. Sabes que puedes contarme cualquier cosa, ¿verdad?”. dijo Mike, tratando de tranquilizarla.
Taylor asintió lentamente, con el labio inferior tembloroso.
“Es que no quiero ir más. ¿Podemos mudarnos para que pueda ir a otro colegio, por favor, papá?”.
No Es Posible
Mike y Tiffany se miraron. Sabían que no era posible mudarse. Esta vez, Tiffany intervino.
“Cariño, sé que es difícil, pero no podemos movernos. Tenemos que solucionar tu problema para que puedas volver a ser feliz”.
Pero cuando Taylor oyó eso, no se sintió feliz en absoluto. Ya no quería hablar más con sus padres.
Miedos Ocultos
A medida que pasaban los días, Mike no podía evitar la sensación de que algo iba muy mal.
Observó de cerca a Taylor, notando su creciente renuencia a salir de casa, su disminución del apetito y su retraimiento general de las actividades que antes disfrutaba.
Estaba claro que Taylor luchaba contra algunos miedos ocultos. Mike y Tiffany no sabían qué hacer.
Un Día Libre
Mike decidió tomarse un día libre en el trabajo para quedarse en casa con Taylor.
Esperaba que el hecho de pasar más tiempo juntos la animara a sincerarse sobre lo que le preocupaba.
Vio que el día en casa había hecho maravillas con su hija. Incluso sonrió un par de veces mientras preparaban juntos la merienda. Pero no sabía si conseguiría que se abriera.
Nervioso
Entonces aprovechó su oportunidad una vez más. “Calabacita, ¿quieres contarle a papá por qué eres tan infeliz en el colegio? Te prometo que no me enfadaré. Sólo quiero ayudarte”.
En un instante, fue como si Taylor se hubiera callado y empezara a ponerse nerviosa.
Mike podía ver el miedo que se apoderaba de ella, y lo único que quería era ayudarla.
Sentirse Impotente
En ese momento, Mike se sintió impotente mientras Taylor corría a su habitación, sin duda para llorar. Él había hecho todo lo posible con ella, e incluso un día libre en el trabajo para pasarlo con ella no ayudó en nada a la causa.
Ahora tenía que pensar en algo. Estaba claro que su hija necesitaba ayuda urgentemente, y cuanto más tiempo lo dejara, más posibilidades tenía de que la situación empeorara.
Mientras tanto, trató de pensar en una manera de ayudarla. Estaba a punto de averiguarlo antes de recibir una llamada del colegio al día siguiente. Por fin había estallado.
Una Llamada De La Escuela
Mike acababa de formular un plan cuando recibió una llamada.
Normalmente no contestaba llamadas durante el trabajo, pero se fijó en el número único. Era de la escuela de Taylor. Sabía que no podía ser buena.
Atendió el teléfono y escuchó al director al otro lado del auricular. Pero lo que tenían que decir hizo que Mike corriera hacia su coche.
Despacho Del Director
Mike tuvo que correr a la escuela tan rápido como pudo. No podía creer lo que había oído por teléfono. Tenía que estar allí para su hija. El tiempo apremiaba y condujo tan rápido como pudo.
El preocupado padre llegó a la escuela en diez minutos y no se anduvo con remilgos a la hora de aparcar.
Consiguió entrar en un tiempo récord y encontró a su pequeña sentada en el despacho del director. Había sufrido una crisis nerviosa.
Breakdown
Mike couldn’t believe the state that he found his daughter in. She had a tear-stained face and was looking down at her shoes.
He stared back at the principal and said, “What had happened?” The principal shook his head.
He explained that Taylor had a breakdown in class. Something really was getting to the little girl, but she wouldn’t tell anyone what was bothering her.
Going Home
The principal told Mike that she needed some rest and that she would be fine. But Mike silently disagreed. He knew there was more to it than just her bellyaching. Something was bothering her.
The father knew that he had to get to the bottom of it if the school faculty wasn’t going to.
He needed a soundproof plan, but he would take things way further than he ever intended to.
An Idea
It was then that Mike had a lightbulb moment go off in his head. What if there was a way to be at school with Taylor without actually being there, he thought?
He knew just exactly what he needed to do. He went down to the garage, where he kept his usual supplies.
He hoped that his plan would work.
Handy With Tools
Mike had always been handy with tools. His father had taught him how to use anything from a screwdriver to a belt sander and everything in-between.
This meant he had a unique plan that would take advantage of his skills.
He’d just have to wait until the moment of opportunity arose. Then, he would be able to make something that would show the truth for what it was.
Suspicions
Mike had his suspicions of what was happening to his daughter. He just wished he could have gotten the truth out of her without having to go to such terrible lengths to find out for himself.
He knew what he was doing wasn’t the most legal thing, but he didn’t plan on getting caught by anyone.
If his wife found out what he was doing before he found any evidence, then he would have been condemned.
One Last Chance
Mike sat in his workshop, looking at the plan he had laid out, and shook his head. He didn’t want it to come to this. He got up and decided to give the school one last chance to tell him what was going on.
He went to bed, knowing that in the morning, he would march over to the school and meet with the principal whether they wanted to see him or not.
Nothing was more powerful than a father’s fury.
Heading To The School
Mike dropped off Taylor at school and drove around the block before parking back at the school. He wouldn’t let his daughter know what he was doing. He knew that he’d only embarrass her if he did.
He headed straight to the principal’s office. He didn’t make any kind of appointment.
He was going to barge in and see if they could tell him the truth about everything.
Surprised To See Him
The principal was surprised to see Mike walking into his office. “You have to make an…” But he cut him off, “Please, I need to talk about Taylor. She didn’t just have a bad day. Something’s going on.”
The principal stared at Mike with a sympathetic look on his face.
“I understand. I noticed it, too, but my hands are unfortunately tied. There’s no evidence to point out what’s causing her pain. If she won’t tell you, then there’s nothing we can do,” He explained to the father.
Unacceptable
Mike slammed his fist down on the table as tears formed in his eyes, “Please, you have to do something. It’s unacceptable that this is going on with my daughter.”
The principal seemed torn up with the display Mike was putting on.
After a moment of silence, he replied, “I suppose there is something we can do, but it’s risky and could get us both in trouble.”
Finding Evidence
“If you can find any evidence, then theoretically, I would have no choice but to help you. The issue is in how you would get that evidence,” The principal said, insinuating something sinister.
That’s when it all clicked in Mike’s head. “So if I turn up some evidence no matter how I got it, then you’ll help Taylor?” He asked.
The principal nodded his head but said that if he was caught, he’d be in big trouble.
Going Ahead With His Plan
Mike left the principal’s office with a lot on his mind. Now, all he had to do was get evidence for the principal. He felt like a secret agent gathering data that he wasn’t supposed to. It was now more riskier than ever.
But the principal didn’t know that he would have done this anyway if he didn’t help him.
He’d continue his plan to build something that would help his daughter. He needed that evidence.
Heading Home
Mike headed to work and later picked up his daughter from school. She was none the wiser that he had seen the principal and seemed as sad as she normally was.
He comforted her, knowing that soon he would find out the truth behind everything.
After getting home, he could continue his project. But he’d need a way to capture video. Then it came to him.
Having Something Handy
Luckily, part of what he would need to ensure his plan was already in their house. He remembered an old GoPro that they used whenever they went on holiday. He found it in an old trunk that they barely used anymore.
He dusted the device off and put it in his workshop. It was finally almost time to put everything together.
He was so close to finding out the truth.
Caught
With his device so close to being ready, he stepped back and stared at it in satisfaction, but that’s when he heard a mouselike sound from behind him – “Daddy, I’m tired. Can you ready me a bedtime story?”
Mike jumped back and saw his daughter in the doorframe, rubbing her eyes and holding her stuffed bunny under her arm.
What was he gonna do now that he was caught?
Taking Her To Bed
Mike thought that it was all over. Taylor would notice the contraption and then tell Tiffany. But then he noticed something: she was so tired that she wasn’t even looking into the room.
“I’ll tuck you in and tell you a story, Sweetie,” He said, rushing her out of the room. He locked the door behind him and took her to bed.
He kept his promise and read a story to her. He watched her fall into dreamland and kissed her forehead. Now, it was time for action.
Sneaky
When Taylor was asleep that night, he snuck into her bedroom to take her school backpack. He took it to his work table in the basement and began work on his plan.
He knew it was a sneaky plan, but it was the only way he could figure out what was going on.
Within an hour, the hidden camera was secured to Taylor’s backpack without being visible.
A Work Of Genius
Mike wiped his brow and finally looked at his work. He was proud of what he had accomplished, even if it was a little underhanded. In his mind it was his work of genius. Now he just had to sneak it up.
He went to the rack where Taylor left her backpack and carefully placed it there.
With any luck, she would have no idea that he had tampered with it at all. But the father didn’t know what he was going to find.
A Glimmer Of Hope
The next morning, Taylor was reluctant to go to school as usual. However, this time Mike had a small glimmer of hope.
He watched as Taylor reluctantly put on her backpack and made her way out the door.
With his heart pounding, Mike hoped that Taylor wouldn’t discover the hidden camera and remove the device from her backpack.
Close To The End
Sadly, to get to the bottom of things, Taylor would have to spend one more day miserable.
He wished he could tell her that it would all change soon, but he didn’t want her knowing his plan. Instead, he just had to encourage her.
He hated sending her to school knowing she’d be subjected to whatever was tormenting her, but at least it would be the last time.
Trust
On the way there, Mike noticed the same sad expression on her face. The last thing he wanted was for her to have another breakdown. Once they got to school, Mike decided to say something to her.
“Hey, sweetie. You can trust me. I’ll be with you the entire time even if you can’t see me, okay?” He said with a smile.
Taylor seemed to perk up a little as she left the car. Soon, Mike would know what was bothering her.
Going To Work
After dropping Taylor off, Mike knew that it would be a while until he could check the footage from the day. He went to work and could barely concentrate on the task at hand.
He couldn’t help but think of his poor girl. Was she doing alright?
All he knew was that by the end of the day, he’d be able to review the footage that would be collected. But the truth was nothing like he imagined.
A Long Day
The day seemed to stretch on forever as Mike anxiously waited for the time to fetch Taylor from school. When she finally got into the car, Mike’s heart sank as he saw her slumped shoulders and downcast eyes.
As per usual, he drove to McDonald’s to get her a special after-school treat.
She was grateful, but it didn’t lift her mood too much.
Asking Her
Mike decided to ask his daughter once again how her day had gone. He had a feeling that she would say the same thing, but he needed to be sure. But then she said the unexpected.
“It felt a little better after you spoke to me in the car! I just imagined you being with me and things were better.”
It brought some comfort to Mike, but he needed to know exactly what was upsetting her.
No Chance Yet
Taylor trudged into the house, and Mike didn’t have a chance to get to her backpack, just yet. It would seem too suspicious.
He had to wait until nightfall, when both Tiffany and Taylor were asleep, for him to review the findings of the day.
His nerves were shot thinking about what he was about to see.
Second Guessing Himself
But as more time stretched on, the concerned father thought more about what he had done. Had he crossed a line by installing the camera into her backpack? He knew if he was caught, he’d be in trouble.
He second-guessed himself. Was this taking things too far?
Then he thought about the way she looked after school every day and the breakdown she had just days ago. He knew the right answer.
Thinking Of The Principal’s Plan
Then Mike thought back to the pact he had made with the principal. He was anonymously backed by him and had his secret support. Now he just had to review the evidence and see what was going on.
Mike was nervous to find out what had been tormenting his daughter.
He was worried he’d overreact, or maybe it was something out of his control? Either way, he had to snap out of it.
The Right Thing
Mike shook off his doubts and soldiered on through the day. It would soon be Taylor’s bedtime, and then he could finally take a look at everything as a whole. He felt worried about what he’d see.
He took deep breaths to try and calm down. This was finally the time he’d see the truth firsthand.
But he had no idea how much of a nightmare it would turn into.
Retrieving The Backpack
As soon as his wife Tiffany and his daughter Taylor had laid their heads down to sleep, Mike took his chance.
He quickly went to Taylor’s room to retrieve the backpack with the hidden camera. His hands shook as he walked down to the basement.
His forehead had beads of sweat that were dripping as he walked down the stairs.
Watching The Footage
He sat at his work table and connected the device to his laptop. It was time to see what exactly was going on. He didn’t know what to expect. All he knew was that this was for his daughter’s own good.
He played back the footage, his heart pounding even louder in his chest.
He watched with bated breath as he watched his daughter’s point of view of the whole day. What would he uncover?
Horrified
What he saw on the screen left him horrified and angry. The footage revealed a group of older kids taunting Taylor, making fun of her, and even taking her belongings.
It was evident that she was being bullied, and the culprits were caught on camera.
Mike shed a tear as he watched his defenseless daughter try to stand up for herself.
Fury and Determination
As Mike watched the footage, a wave of fury washed over him. How could anyone be so cruel to his sweet, innocent daughter? His protective instincts kicked into overdrive, and he knew he had to take immediate action.
He thought about his next move. But he would have to trust that his wife wouldn’t overreact to his scheme.
He hadn’t told her about stitching the camera inside of the backpack.
Making A Decision
Now that he had undeniable proof of what had been making his daughter so sad, he had a decision to make.
He wrestled with it over and over again in his mind before making it up. He wanted to show it to someone else before the principal – his wife.
Tiffany deserved to know, but he knew it would hurt her to see her daughter in pain. He decided to do the right thing.
Showing Tiffany
He showed the footage to Tiffany, who was equally outraged. “We can’t let this continue,” she said with determination. “We need to talk to the school and put an end to this.”
His wife didn’t hate him for what he did. She admired him for finding out what was really going on with his daughter.
They would now fight a combined front to make sure the school did something about it.
Their Next Move
The couple thought about what they could do now that they knew the truth. In Tiffany’s mind, there was only one thing that they could do now.
She wanted them to go straight to their daughter’s school.
Mike agreed, and they set up a meeting with the principal. This time, he would have to take him seriously now that he had evidence to prove everything he had suspected. But what would the principal say?
A Good Feeling
While Tiffany seemed to be wondering what the principal would do, Mike already knew what was going to happen. He wasn’t in the dark like she was.
He just hoped the principal would keep to his word and help his daughter.
The principal must have known why they were going to see him. But he wondered what would end up happening to his dear daughter.
Checking On Taylor
In the meantime, Mike decided to check on his bundle of joy. He wanted to see how she was feeling and if she was okay.
Now that he had context, he could help her properly. He went into her room and told her that no one would ever bully her again.
He explained that he was going to see the principal about it, and she smiled hopefully. He had to make sure the principal stuck to his word.
Confrontation
The next day, Mike and Tiffany marched into the school principal’s office, armed with the evidence from the hidden camera.
The principal, Mr. Thompson, watched the footage with a mix of shock and concern.
“I had no idea this was happening,” he admitted, clearly taken aback. “I promise you, we will address this immediately. No student should ever feel unsafe or bullied in our school.”
Suffering For So Long
Mike and Tiffany left the meeting cautiously optimistic that the situation would be resolved. They promised to do everything in their power to end the bullying once and for all.
They felt horrible that they didn’t do something sooner. Taylor had been suffering for so long.
But that would soon change, and they knew, however, that their battle was far from over.
Tensions Rise
In the days that followed, tensions at the school escalated. The bullies were confronted and disciplined, but their anger seemed to intensify. Taylor’s already difficult situation grew worse as the bullies retaliated against her for getting them in trouble.
Mike and Tiffany watched helplessly as their daughter became even more withdrawn, her fear and anxiety palpable.
They knew they had to do something before things spiraled completely out of control.
An End To Everything
The couple couldn’t bear to see their child in such pain and anguish. They could only think of one final solution that would put an end to everything. Mike and Tiffany moved Taylor to a new school, one that assured there were less bullies.
Taylor took some time to adjust to the new place, but within a few months, her mood improved drastically.
It seemed like things were finally looking up.
