A Texas family recently found themselves at the center of an extraordinary animal rescue mission, capturing hearts and praise nationwide. On July 13, the Adlong family of Amarillo discovered a tiny, seemingly orphaned bird on the ground during a family barbecue. With quick thinking and a touch of ingenuity, they managed to save the fragile creature in a way that has since gone viral.

A Creative Solution

When Katie Adlong, 36, spotted the baby bird alone, her first instinct was to help, and without a proper container on hand, she improvised and wrapped the bird up in a tortilla. “I wrapped my little bird in the warm tortilla and swaddled him up,” Katie recounted. “That’s all I had.”

The family then contacted the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. A staff member called Amee, who arrived to assess the situation, was pleasantly surprised to find the bird, which turned out to be a Mississippi Kite, snugly secured in the tortilla.

Innovative And Effective

The tortilla not only provided warmth but also prevented the bird from injuring itself further. The wildlife center praised the family’s resourcefulness in a Facebook post, stating, “Undoubtedly, it was an inventive method to keep the baby warm. And surprisingly, it was effective.”

The baby bird, affectionately named Taquito, was transported to the rehabilitation center, where it began its recovery. The center’s post about the rescue quickly gained attention online, with many commenters lauding the Adlongs’ quick thinking.

A Heartwarming Outcome

Reflecting on the experience, Katie said, “It’s heartwarming and exciting. All we wanted was to save this baby and make sure it had a long, healthy life.” The story not only highlighted the compassion of the Adlong family but also brought attention to the Mississippi Kite, a bird species found throughout the US in fields, meadows, forests, and woodlands.

Going Viral And Raising Awareness

The Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center capitalized on the viral story by creating and selling T-shirts with the slogan “Tortillas save lives” featuring an image of Taquito wrapped in his tortilla.

The tale of the rescue effort is a reminder of the impact ordinary people can have when they act with kindness and creativity. The Adlongs not only saved a life but also inspired countless others.
