Dealing With a Pregnancy Scare Like a Boss

You were having such a great time together. One thing led to another and you were caught up in the flow. You didn’t want to stop, and any notion of acting responsibly went out of the window.

Now it’s been two weeks and you’re looking at the pages on your calendar turning over one by one and nothing’s happening. Every cramp or gas bubble in your stomach feels like a potential pregnancy symptom. The faintest feeling of nausea feels like a definite sign.

We’ve all been there.

The scariest of horror movies cannot come close to the sheer horror of a pregnancy scare.

Unless of course, you are married or in a long term relationship and want to get pregnant (in which case it’s not really a scare at all is it?).

They didn’t joke about being careful with contraceptives now, did they? Pregnancy scares happen more often than you may realize. Almost every woman has had at least one and they have their own stories to share.

For me, the worst part is the waiting.

You can pay lots of moolah for an early pregnancy test if you want to try to find out sooner, but here are the facts. You most likely won’t know for sure if you’re pregnant or not until at least the day your period is due.

The wait itself is nerve wrecking. And the worst part is that all the early symptoms of pregnancy that you’ve Googled a hundred times are almost the same as your PMS so there is no sure way of knowing.

You’ve just got to wait for Aunt Flo to arrive (or not). Never have you waited with such anticipation for her to grace you with those sweet stomach cramps as much as this month.

It’s alright girl, it happens to the best of us.

So let’s talk a little about how to deal with a pregnancy scare and make it through the cycle without losing your mind.

You got to wait for your period but you got to know the exact date it’s due. After years of menstruating you may know how long your cycle is. Some women go through a 28 day cycle and for others it’s shorter or longer.

Whatever your cycle length, try to remember the last date you had your period and do the math. Find the date and make a big red circle around it on your calendar.

This is the date that may decide your future.

Will it be a huge sigh of relief or is there a bun in the oven?

Once you have the date of your last period down and know when the next one is expected, try to remember the date of your sexual encounter. Do some math and figure out if it conception on that day is possible. (You are more likely to conceive in the first half of your cycle than the second).

Stop with the Googling.

It will only drive you crazier.

Remember the time you had a stomach ache and Google told you it was colon cancer and you had 10 days to live? The internet is not a certified doctor. So stop taking every niggling pain and twitch to the internet.

Weigh your options right now. So you may be starting college soon, or be all about your career or already have three toddlers running around. A baby was not on the agenda, at this moment or maybe ever. But it’s now a definite possibility.

Don’t worry. This is not 1960 and you have options.

Talk to a friend. Bottling this up and going through it alone can drive even the most level headed of us crazy. Tell someone about it. Talk to the guy so that he can be in on any decision in case there are two lines on the pregnancy test.

When the day is finally here, get a stick and pee on it. Make sure to do the test using your early morning pee since this gives the most accurate results.

If there is one line, then you still have a wait on your hands until your period actually arrives or more tests in the near future.

And in case there are two, well, I hope the sex was worth it. You now have some big decisions ahead of you.

Have you had a pregnancy scare? How did you cope with it? Let us know in the comments blow.
