In a moment that captured the hearts of everyone in the room, 6-year-old Jaxon Carter delivered a deeply moving speech at his kindergarten graduation, paying tribute to his late mother, Taryn Marie Gainey. With a composed and heartfelt delivery, Jaxon’s words brought tears to the eyes of parents, teachers, and fellow students at New Dawn Academy, a public STEM-focused charter school in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

A Tragic Loss

Jaxon’s mother tragically passed away in an apartment fire just weeks before he started kindergarten. His father, Justin Carter, shared the emotional journey they’d endured since the loss. “I had to find a school for him last-minute and it just so happened that the school was a great fit for him,” Carter said. “The school alone was a lifesaver.”

A Remarkable Speech

As the school year ended, Jaxon’s teacher asked him to give a brief speech at the graduation ceremony. This request evolved into a full valedictory speech, crafted with the help of his grandmother. Jaxon’s dad was kept in the dark about the content until the day of the event.

In his nearly four-minute speech, Jaxon spoke from memory, beginning with a tribute to his late mother. “When I started kindergarten, I was a little 5-year-old who had lost my beautiful mother a month before,” he began. He related the growth and learning he experienced throughout the year, becoming “braver, smarter, kind-hearted, and more grateful.”

Jaxon’s speech also included heartfelt thanks to his teacher, whom he describes as having a big heart, and his four grandparents, who play major roles in his life. He then gave a special thank you to his father, saying, “You are the best daddy ever, and I love you so very much.”

He concluded with a poignant dedication: “I dedicate my speech, good grades, all school awards, and my kindergarten graduation to my beautiful mommy, who I will always love and miss so very much. I know she will always be with me in my heart.”

A Proud And Grateful Father

Justin Carter described his reaction to his son’s speech as one of shock and speechlessness. “You could see that he meant every word of it,” he said. “He didn’t fumble… it was remarkable.”

Carter emphasized the importance of keeping Taryn’s memory alive for Jaxon. “He has a nice village where he has someone he can talk to at all times,” he said, highlighting the support from both his own and Taryn’s parents.

Jaxon’s story is a testament to the resilience and strength found in even the youngest of hearts. With his family and school community behind him, he continues to honor his mother’s memory and thrive in his educational journey.
