Designing a nursery is so exciting! As parents, we want to make sure our little ones feel calm and peaceful in their new space and gender neutral nursery themes will do just that.

Use this guide to get ideas and inspiration for your gender neutral nursery design. From soothing neutral color schemes to theme ideas, furniture and accessories, we’ll cover it all.

It All Starts With Color!

When it comes to designing a gender-neutral nursery, your color choices play a pivotal role in creating a serene, balanced and inviting environment for your little one. Many gender neutral schemes use simple wall treatments to maintain a minimalist look. You can’t go wrong by painting the walls white, grey or cream. Or if you want to add pattern, use a complimentary wallpaper on one wall such as the example below.

This stunning scheme created by Project Nursery uses all the elements of gender neutral design to create a relaxing, cosy and clean space. It is based on a mostly white background pallette, used alongside an elegant light grey herringbone wallpaper. The room is completed with wooden and white furniture and accessories made from natural products such as wicker and seagrass. The beautiful boho style cream rug brings the whole room together.

Natural Tones

Embrace the warmth of nature by incorporating natural tones into your nursery design. Shades like warm beige, tan, terracotta, and soft browns create a grounding and comforting feel. Natural tones can be paired with a variety of other colors to create harmonious combinations. These natural hues evoke a sense of warmth and cosiness and are versatile enough to cater to various themes, from rustic to modern.

Neutral Whites and Grays

The classic combination of neutral whites and grays creates a versatile foundation for a gender neutral nursery. By using these neutral colors as a backdrop, you can introduce pops of color through accessories, textiles, and decor. This approach allows for flexibility in design and allows you to adapt the nursery’s style as your child grows. White and gray provide a blank canvas while creating an atmosphere of simplicity and elegance.

Most of us won’t have a nursery quite as big as the one in the image below, but replicating the color scheme is very doable, regardless of how small your nursery is.

Neutral Nursery Furniture

It’s important to choose the right pieces of furniture to create a functional and peaceful space that can grow with your child. White or light wood nursery furniture will match any color scheme or theme and will last for years to come. Add some versatile drawers or dressers in natural finishes to store all of your baby’s essentials. Keep it simple with minimalistic clean lines to maintain the neutral look.

And don’t forget to include a cozy glider chair or rocker in neutral upholstery for those special moments of feeding, reading, and cuddling.

Get the basics right!

Once you have the color scheme and furniture right you can decide on adding accesories to create a theme.

Gender Neutral Nursery Themes

Woodland Theme

Step into a magical forest wonderland with a woodland theme for your nursery! This theme brings the beauty of nature indoors, creating a cozy haven filled with cute animals like owls, foxes, and bears. Earthy tones, wooden accents, and leafy motifs set the stage for a peaceful space that sparks your child’s curiosity. Imagine a nursery adorned with tree-shaped bookshelves, whimsical animal wall decals, and soft blankets that mimic the feel of mossy forest floors. A woodland theme captures the tranquility of the outdoors and encourages your little one’s sense of exploration.

Boho Theme

Let your creativity run wild with a boho-themed nursery! This trend blends vibrant colors, global patterns, and natural textures to create a lively and inviting atmosphere. Infuse the space with a mix of textiles, such as macramé wall hangings, patterned rugs, and soft, layered fabrics. Incorporate wicker baskets for storage and add plenty of plants to bring an element of nature indoors. With its free-spirited charm and artistic flair, a boho-themed nursery is a sanctuary where creativity knows no bounds.

Coastal Theme

Bring the calming vibes of the seaside into your nursery with a coastal-inspired theme. Soft blues, sandy neutrals, and oceanic elements evoke a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Think soothing waves, seashell decor, and maritime accents like anchors and sailboats. Adorn the walls with ocean-inspired murals or prints, and incorporate nautical details into the crib bedding and mobile. With its fresh and airy ambiance, a coastal-themed nursery offers a peaceful retreat reminiscent of beachside escapes, creating a gentle and calming environment for your little one.

Safari Theme

Take your little one on a wild adventure with a safari-themed nursery that fosters a love for exploration and nature. This theme transports your child to the African savanna, introducing them to exotic animals and lush landscapes. Incorporate earthy tones, animal prints, and safari-inspired decor like binoculars and adventure maps. Soft plush toys of lions, elephants, and giraffes add a playful touch, while wall murals of sweeping grasslands bring the safari experience to life. A safari-themed nursery ignites curiosity about the world and its diverse inhabitants, making it a vibrant and educational setting for your little explorer.

Gender Neutral Nursery Accessories

Accessories are the key to adding personal touches to your nursery and creating the theme you want. Here are some accessories we love!

Natural Elements

Incorporating natural elements into the nursery brings a sense of tranquility and serenity. Introduce potted plants, nature-inspired decor, and earthy textures to create a connection to the outdoors. Plants not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to improved air quality. Natural elements infuse the space with a touch of the outdoors, promoting a sense of calmness and well-being.

By thoughtfully selecting gender-neutral nursery accessories, you’re curating an environment that encourages growth, learning, and creativity. Each chosen accessory becomes a part of the narrative, helping to shape the nursery into a place of comfort, love, and boundless possibilities. So, have fun creating a space that your little one will love!

Soft Textiles

Curtains, rugs, blankets, and cushions contribute to the coziness and comfort of the nursery. Select soft textiles in neutral patterns, textures, and colors that complement the overall aesthetic. Consider natural materials like cotton, wool, and jute for a tactile experience that appeals to the senses. These textiles not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but also create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

Wall Art, Toys and Decals

Transform the walls of your nursery with artwork and decals that resonate with your chosen theme. Inspirational quotes and messages of love can add a lovely touch.

Natural Storage Solutions

Functional storage solutions can be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Opt for wooden shelves, bins, and baskets that blend seamlessly with the nursery’s decor. Wood brings a touch of warmth and natural beauty to the space while providing a clutter-free environment. These storage solutions are versatile and can accommodate toys, books, and other essentials while maintaining a cohesive look.
