The right book, magazine or website can easily tell you what being pregnant is like—the signs and symptoms associated with it, the physiological description of the pregnancy, even the emotions that come with being pregnant. After a while, they start to sound the same. It’s one of the disadvantages of living in such an informed world—even the most special things begin to sound mundane, even dreary. Of course, if you weren’t expecting on being with child in the first place then that is expectedly frightening. But planned or no, there are several things you can do to make pregnancy the beautiful experience it truly is.

Recognize Life

The first and most important thing to remember once you’ve learned that you’re pregnant is that there is life within you. Acknowledging the existence of another begins a relationship. For first time mums, this would prove to be most helpful. It is a fact you can always come back on whenever you think pregnancy is getting the best of you. Recognizing the unborn child living inside of you puts you on the right track. It gets you thinking about the important basic things like getting your first pre-natal check-up, eating right and avoiding places which might get you and that baby sick.

The best way to do this is to visit your doctor. The first ultrasound will help visualize that life for you. Hearing the heartbeat, even feeling the foetus move will make it real. This goes for unplanned pregnancies as well. There is nothing wrong with thinking about the future but as you decide on your next steps, include in your decision the unborn baby living within you.

At the doctor’s, urine and blood tests will be done to screen you for other diseases that need treating. You may not be ready this early, but this first visit goes a long way in taking care of you and that unborn child. This is also your chance to ask questions about being pregnant and from the people who know best. This is a good way of getting that anxiety alleviated.

Party!

Now this may sound odd as most pregnancy books want you out of the partying atmosphere but you can still celebrate without inhaling cigarette smoke and downing cocktails. Surprise your partner with a romantic dinner with the news. Get your family together for a luncheon. Round your friends up for a baby shower, or two! The point is celebration. Good clean fun is distressing for you and the baby. Plus it puts the pregnancy in a totally positive light. While you may be frightened at the prospect of giving birth, sharing the news with the people you know and love will be surprisingly wonderful. The outpour of love and well wishes will set your mind at ease and even reinforce that network of people who will be there for you and your baby.

Learn

Learning about being pregnant is vital. Pregnancy calendars will tell you what signs and symptoms to expect in the first, second and third trimester. Pregnancy classes are also available at local health centres and hospitals to get you acquainted with fellow mums-to-be as well. Being informed helps you be less anxious over the upcoming childbirth even postpartum concerns. One thing though: try to avoid films, books and other media that show dying or injured children and/or mothers. While you may be a regular murder-mystery-suspense-thriller fan, trust the experts when they say you won’t be able to handle those right now. They are scary, even depressing. A great deal of optimism is needed during pregnancy.

Be Healthy

Drink your pre-natal vitamins. Lessen the sweets and the salt in your diet. Drink lots of water. Get enough rest and sleep. Exercise. Taking care of yourself will help you deal with pregnancy symptoms a lot better and make the nine months run smoothly. If before you find it hard to find the time to go out for a walk or say no to that slice of chocolate cake, then do it for your baby.

While pregnancy is certainly not an easy thing to go through, you do not go through it alone. You have friends and family who support you no matter what the situation is. Also, allow some time alone to listen to your baby inside. Bond with him or her because being pregnant is one of the most precious things our life has to offer. Nine months goes by faster than you think. Enjoy it.
