Foods You Should Never Eat While Pregnant

  Written by Tarryn Adonis
  Published on March 20th, 2025

During pregnancy, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for both the mother and the baby’s development. While there are plenty of nutritious foods to enjoy, there are also certain foods that should be avoided due to potential health risks. Here’s a list of foods you should never eat while pregnant and why they can be harmful.

1. Raw or Undercooked Seafood

  • Examples: Sushi, oysters, clams, raw shellfish
  • Risk: Raw seafood can contain harmful bacteria and parasites, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses like listeria and salmonella, which can lead to miscarriage or preterm labor.

2. Raw or Undercooked Meat and Poultry

  • Examples: Rare steak, raw eggs in dishes, undercooked chicken
  • Risk: Can carry toxoplasmosis, salmonella, or E. coli, which can be dangerous for both mother and baby.

3. Deli Meats and Unpasteurized Hot Dogs

  • Examples: Cold cuts, bologna, turkey slices
  • Risk: These meats can be contaminated with listeria, which can cause serious complications, including stillbirth and miscarriage.
  • Tip: If you must eat deli meats, heat them until steaming hot to kill any bacteria.

4. Unpasteurized Dairy Products

  • Examples: Raw milk, soft cheeses (brie, feta, camembert, blue cheese)
  • Risk: May contain listeria, which can lead to serious infections in pregnant women.
  • Tip: Always choose pasteurized versions of dairy products.

5. High-Mercury Fish

  • Examples: Shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish
  • Risk: Mercury can harm a developing baby’s nervous system.
  • Safe Alternatives: Salmon, tilapia, shrimp, and canned light tuna (in moderation).

6. Raw or Runny Eggs

  • Examples: Homemade mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, eggnog, soft-boiled eggs
  • Risk: Can contain salmonella, leading to food poisoning and dehydration.
  • Tip: Ensure eggs are fully cooked before consuming.

7. Unwashed Fruits and Vegetables

  • Risk: Can be contaminated with toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can cause serious pregnancy complications.
  • Tip: Always wash produce thoroughly before eating.

8. Caffeine in Excess

  • Examples: Coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda
  • Risk: High caffeine intake is linked to miscarriage and low birth weight.
  • Limit: No more than 200 mg of caffeine per day (about one 12-ounce cup of coffee).

9. Alcohol

  • Examples: Beer, wine, liquor
  • Risk: Can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, causing developmental and birth defects.
  • Tip: Avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy.

10. Artificial Sweeteners in Large Amounts

  • Examples: Diet sodas, sugar-free candies
  • Risk: Some sweeteners (like saccharin) may cross the placenta and affect the baby.
  • Safe Alternatives: Natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup in moderation.

Final Thoughts

Avoiding these foods during pregnancy can help keep you and your baby safe. When in doubt, opt for fresh, well-cooked, and pasteurized foods to minimize risks. If you’re unsure about a particular food, consult your healthcare provider to make the best dietary choices for your pregnancy.
