10 Things No One Tells You About Pregnancy

  Written by Tarryn Adonis
  Published on March 27th, 2025

Pregnancy is often portrayed as a magical experience filled with glowing skin, exciting baby kicks, and joyful anticipation. While it certainly has its beautiful moments, there are plenty of surprises along the way that people don’t always talk about. Here are 10 things no one tells you about pregnancy.

1. Morning Sickness Isn’t Just in the Morning

Many people assume nausea only strikes in the morning, but it can hit anytime—day or night. Some women even experience it throughout their entire pregnancy, not just in the first trimester.

2. Your Sense of Smell Becomes Superhuman

Pregnancy hormones can heighten your sense of smell, making everyday scents—like coffee, perfume, or even your partner’s deodorant—completely unbearable.

3. Your Belly Isn’t the Only Thing That Grows

Along with your belly, you may notice swelling in your feet, hands, and even your nose! Fluid retention and increased blood volume can cause unexpected changes in your body.

4. Food Aversions Can Be Stronger Than Cravings

Everyone talks about pregnancy cravings, but many women experience intense food aversions. Foods you once loved may suddenly make you gag, while bland foods become your best friend.

5. You Might Get a Dark Line Down Your Belly

Known as the linea nigra, this dark line that appears down the center of your belly is caused by pregnancy hormones. It usually fades after childbirth.

6. Pregnancy Can Affect Your Teeth and Gums

Hormonal changes can make your gums more sensitive, leading to bleeding when brushing or flossing. Some women even experience temporary loose teeth due to shifting ligaments.

7. You Might Snore—A Lot

Even if you’ve never snored before, pregnancy can cause nasal congestion and weight gain that lead to snoring. A humidifier or an extra pillow might help.

8. Your Emotions Will Be All Over the Place

Mood swings are real. One moment you’re crying over a commercial, and the next you’re snapping at your partner for eating the last cookie. Blame it on the hormones.

9. Leg Cramps and Weird Aches Are Common

Many women experience sudden leg cramps, back pain, and pelvic pressure, especially in the later months. Stretching and staying hydrated can help alleviate discomfort.

10. Labor Might Not Start the Way You Expect

Despite what movies show, labor doesn’t always begin with your water dramatically breaking. For most women, contractions start first, and the water may not break until much later—or it might have to be broken by a doctor.

Final Thoughts

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it comes with its fair share of surprises. Knowing what to expect beyond the typical advice can help you navigate the experience with more confidence. Every pregnancy is unique, so embrace the unexpected and enjoy the ride!
