For most people, recalling the exact moment a miracle enters their lives comes easily. Such is the case for Dev Erlich, who can trace hers to 2021 when her world changed for the better. Dev had just brought home two family members who held her very heart. A new mom, Dev decided to double her joy by bringing home Skyler, a golden retriever, alongside her newborn son, Shalom.

A Bold Move

Dev recalls the decision as a bold move. She was nervous about the responsibility and pressure that lay ahead. However, she wasn’t about to back down. With a bit of love, patience, and preparation, she knew Shalom and Skylar would become the best of friends.

The Gamble Pays Off

Fast-forward to today, and Dev’s belief has been more than validated. Shalom, now an adorable 14-month-old, and Skylar, a brave three-year-old pup, have formed a friendship that is nothing if not magical. Since the day they met, Skyler has taken the role of her little brother’s furry guardian, while Shalom is her partner in some expected harmless mischief. Dev’s gamble paid off in the best way possible.

The Other Side Of The Story

In a heartfelt video, Dev shared the initial apprehensions she’d harbored about raising a baby and a puppy simultaneously. She was sure the task wouldn’t be easy, and rightfully so. She was caring for actual lives that depended on her, which demanded a lot of engagement and patience. One of her many goals then was to ensure that her puppy felt comfortable around babies. She wanted Skylar to grow up to be a gentle and loving dog. To her delight, Skylar exceeded every expectation she had.

A Match Made In Heaven

Since then, Shalom and Skylar have become inseparable companions. Whether snuggling late afternoon during nap time, playing in the backyard midmorning, or getting into the aforementioned bout of mischief, the two are always together. Commenting on their antics, Dev termed them cute. She knows that their friendship transcends species. “When I feed him, she knows,” she says with a smile. “Skyler knows that right next to Shalom’s chair is the place to be.”

Grateful

Dev often reflects on her decision to bring Skylar and Shalom home together, and she couldn’t be happier with the outcome. “They are really sweet, and he has, like, been like a best friend for life,” she says. “It’s really special,” she reveals. “I am grateful that I’m able to give that to him.”
