I don’t want to be pregnant but I think I am – what should I do?

Before you venture too far into worrying that you’re pregnant, it’s best to start with confirming that’s the case.  A home pregnancy test is a pretty dependable means of confirming a pregnancy, but a follow-up appointment with your OB/GYN is even more definitive.

Firstly, with an open mind, give yourself a chance to feel differently.  Maybe, once upon a time, picturing yourself pregnant at this time, with this person, etc. was unimaginable.   However, now that it’s actually the case, is it so bad?  What changes can you make to your situation to accommodate the fact that a baby is on its way, if any?  If you are closed off to the idea of loving and welcoming this innocent child, why is that?  Can the root of that issue be addressed in exchange for the child’s well-being?

Pregnancy and motherhood can be one of the most beautiful, challenging, exhilarating, and empowering experiences of a woman’s life.  You simply may never realize how physically and emotionally strong you are until you give birth and raise a child of your own.

You’ll also never know a better friend than the child who will be grateful for the life you gifted them.

If your pregnancy was unplanned and the child is unwanted, before dwelling too much on how you wish things were different, immerse yourself in thoughts of what to responsibly do with your current situation.  If having a child at this time is undoable, and before opting for quick solutions like abortion, consider other alternatives, like adoption.  There are millions of happy couples in this world who would give anything to have the opportunity to raise your child as their own.  It is one of the greatest gifts you could ever give another human being during this lifetime, not to mention the gift of life you’d still be able to give your child.

Whatever you may decide, time is of the essence.  Prepping for a baby, especially one unexpected, may require some planning.  The adoption process should also be started as soon as possible.

For the future, to limit stress on both you and your baby, remember that abstinence is the only 100% fool-proof means of avoiding a pregnancy.  If engaging in sexual activity but not prepared to faceall potential consequences, ensure that you are using a reliable means of birth control to minimize the chances of a resulting pregnancy.  When faced with the utmost unplanned consequence, handle it morally and responsibly, with full accountability.
